COVID-19 Delta Variant and Your Health
First detected in India at the end of 2020, the Delta variant of COVID-19 is quickly becoming the dominant strain of the virus around the world. The reason is that the Delta variant is more contagious than previous strains of the virus. For instance, a new study published in the United Kingdom reveals that the Delta variant is 225% more transmissible than the original COVID-19 virus. That is why most new infection in the U.S., the U.K, India, and many countries are from the Delta variant. If that was not bad enough, research indicates that the Delta variant grows more rapidly and at higher concentrations inside the human respiratory tract. The result is that most people infected with the Delta variant had, on average, one thousand times more copies of the virus in their respiratory system than individuals infected with the original strain of COVID-19.
The rapid spread of COVID-19 Delta variant is beginning to take its toll closer to home in Southern California. The number of new daily infections in L.A. County surpassed 1,500 on Thursday, July 15th for the first time since early March, 2021. It is believed that most of these cases are the result of the highly infectious Delta variant. The rising figures prompted Los Angeles County health officials to reinstate an indoors mask mandate, regardless of vaccination status. The new mandate will go into effect starting 11:59 p.m., Saturday July 17. The good news is that recent studies reveal vaccines are extremely effective against the Delta variant. New research indicates that two doses of both the Pfizer and the BioNTech vaccine provide 79% protection against the Delta variant and are also 88% effective against symptoms after an infection. Furthermore, 99% of hospitalizations for all strains of COVID-19 are now among the unvaccinated.
